Masks are no longer required at my other medical providers. While masks have become politically controversial the vast majority of scientific evidence (studies) does not show efficacy in prevention of viral transmission. Prior to 2020 I doubt that you required masks during flu season since studies showed they were not effective. You also still have signs up for six foot social distancing. I assume these are imposed corporate level decisions which doctors who practice evidence based medicine just go along with. I respectfully suggest it’s time to make masks optional since it’s become primarily an issue of belief not science. The human face is important to communication. Who is this masked man (surgeon) I’m entrusting with my well being?! As a former RN It gives me pause to see rote medical compliance which, I believe, furthers fear rather than normalcy. I respectfully comply with your office rules because I need the medical services and recognize that physicians as well as patients are at the mercy of Anderson Clinic corporate decision makers. Some of those may be physicians and that gives me even more pause. Everyone has a right to what they believe but plenty of respected medical experts cite studies that do not come down on the side of constant masking as reasonable—belief vs. science. I hope beyond the operating room doors that only my trusted surgeon will be making medical decisions on my behalf without corporate oversight. And yes, I’m glad my surgeon will be masked in the OR to prevent any icky droplets from contaminating the surgical field. Indeed masks have a purpose—maybe that’s why they are called “surgical masks”. Drop the mask requirement except in the OR suite and I’ll give Anderson Clinic five stars! 🙂
