Be proactive, rather than reactive. Consistency. BETTER communication that will prevent anxiety, a culture of fear and the obsession with employees sharing a lot of (erroneously)”news.”I like the monthly newsletter, but I wonder if the entire staff has access to read it. I wonder if staff bothers to read it if they do receive it. I think to encourage compliance , you might have a monthly scavenger hunt asking 5 questions that can ONLY be answered by reading the newsletter. Give a deadline for all entries. Utilize one of the mailboxes that are underutilized for surveys. Put all the entries in a bin (like a bingo ball bin). On the day that the Employee of the Month is announced, that winner spins the wheel and chooses a winner. I’d suggest a $100 gift card— especially a gas card! Maybe a 2nd and 3rd place too?

Being more mindful of their employees, making it feel that is ok to think of your employees and not making it all about cutting time, and funds. Giving more than 3% pay increase.

Having admin actually see what goes on on the units during the day. Not have the units be notified when they’re coming so they’re on their “best behavior” but truly spend a full shift on the units to see the workload of nursing staff and how no one actually follows the group programming schedule for mhts, social services, and expressive therapy. Pts gets bored when they have nothing going on. It’s not their fault they act out. It’s ours because they only get about 1-1.5 hours of actual groups every day and no one is held accountable or supported. Interns with no training run groups for cbt, ET is short staffed, and recovery tools is a pass out worksheet. Mhts barely have games or books or bibles or markers for pts to use and otherwise the tv is turned on for mindless watching ALL DAY. Program managers should actually be used for unit programming purposes not doing scheduling, visitation, or sitting on a 1to1. Group compliance is talked about yet the only solution they have is cookies and coffee? Thats not therapeutic treatment.
