I recently visited the Cancer Center after trying a medication they prescribed 2 months ago for a urinary tract problem, The medication did not help. They referred me to a Urologist.

I was disappointed in the care my son received. My 9-month-old son was admitted on 12/31 for RSV. We live in Kansas City and were visiting family in Cookeville for the holidays. Therefore, we could not just go to our pediatrician. I noticed my son had an increased work of breathing and was wheezing at my mother-in-law's house. I decided to take him to the emergency room at CRMC. Upon arrival, I read a sign that stated Pediatric Care Center. I felt relieved when I read that sign, however, after my experience, I had a much different feeling. In the ER, the provider in triage I. Kennedy-NP missed the severity of his breathing. Thankfully, the pre- eval RN noticed he was sick, had him re-evaluated, and had us taken back to an ER room. He was labored with a respiratory rate of 55, subcostal retractions, and febrile in the ER. His Spo2 would drop to 88-89% when he was resting. The ER provider wrote for breathing treatments and steroids and wanted to admit my son to the hospital due to his work of breathing. It took 2 hours and me asking numerous staff members in the ER to finally get him medicated for his 101 fever in triage. The pediatrician, Dr. Krier, was wonderful. She gave us the option to stay in the hospital or go home but stated the best thing to do for RSV is suctioning every 3-4 hours, keeping him medicated for fevers, and hydration. Being that we were from out of town and my son was not taking in much hydration, I felt it would be best to stay the night where he could be suctioned every 3 hours and receive the best care possible. During our stay every temperature the staff obtained was axillary. As a medical professional who has worked in many hospitals and with many pediatrics across the country, I know this is not the standard of care for a febrile infant. When checked axillary, his temperature would always read in the 99 to low 100 range and because of that, he rarely got medicated since he was not 100.4. This caused him to have to work harder metabolically. Once on the floor, I asked the night shift nurse multiple times to deep suction my son. She stated she did not have an order for that and would have to page the doctor. She never offered to suction my son, and would not come back for 1-2 hours. While admitted, we never saw RT, or had any communication from nursing staff about suctioning. Dr. Krier initially suctioned my son while in the ER around 3pm and he was not suctioned again until the next morning at 8:30 am, despite my many efforts of asking for suction throughout the night. When Dr. Krier made rounds at 10:30 am, she asked me how I felt he was doing and I told her outside of IV fluids, my son was not doing any better. I informed Dr. Krier that my son was not getting suctioned and was rarely medicated overnight. Dr. Krier informed me that she was unaware that she was paged from the nursing staff throughout our stay. Dr. Krier apologized and told me that every kid on that unit should be getting suctioned at a minimum of every 3-4 hours. She let us go home after I told her I felt we could give him better care at home. Once at home, his rectal temp and even temporal was always 101 or higher. That day my husband and I medicated and suctioned our son every 3-4 hours and continued to do so for 48 more hours. My son was finally sleeping and his respiratory rate and work of breathing was improving. I say all of this because I was hopeful that my son would get the care he needed from CRMC. This is the only regional hospital between Knoxville and the Nashville area serving all of the upper Cumberlands. My hope is that all of the staff and pediatric nurses are trained to recognize sick kids and know how to treat such accordingly. Please review my child's chart and use it as a case study to help provide the training needed for pediatric care in your hospital.Leayn VanDevenlncarter21@gmail.com423-693-9755

I am writing this for my husband. He recieved assitance in ER quickly, but found that having to change rooms for EKG, Lab, UA was difficult due to pain and N/V due to Cholecystitis. Also the room that he was taken to was very disappointing. The ER did not seem busy and always before was taken to a room and all procedures and assessment was done from there. This time taken to another room that was for 2 patients with chairs approx 4- 5 feet apart. Curtain was not drawn, 1 doctor finally pulled when in room to check him. On the door a sign said to" leave door closed due to HIPPA and Germs". I found this very odd since another man was sitting next to my husband with no ideal why he was there and what contagious disease he may have and there definitely was no privacy. Also with my husband vomiting, restless from pain it definitely was not a good experience for that poor man in the room. With CRMC size, I think something else could be arranged. I understand at times the ER becomes very busy and this room would be better than being in the hall and should be for overflow only. I hope this can be used as constructive criticism. The employees were nice and helpful. Just needed privacy and not having to change room for every test. Thank you.
