The overall atmosphere was inviting. The residents were pleased with the staff, which is very important to me. My husband has memory issues.

-VERY impressed that most of the staff knew my Moms name when she arrived (without her name tag yet). People called her by name and she noticed and loved that instant connection. -We didn't have much instruction on how to go about things like what to do in the dining room. Took a while for someone to come and see what we would like. So we asked the protocol and found that just sitting down was the right thing, they just didn't notice us. -Granted, since I stayed the first night with my mom and helped her navigate various things, I didn't have any mention of someone who would "buddy" with her the first days/weeks after I left. I did ask upon leaving if someone could befriend her that way and help her get acquainted with things after I left and it was told me they could find someone to do that. I thought that was protocol, but maybe not. I had to ask for it. -My Mom is taking the steps herself to greet other residents in hopes she can eventually find friends but I know that is a stress that she feels is all hers to carry. It would be nice to have someone invite her to activities which she would otherwise maybe not go to, to find like people to eat with, etc., so its not all on her to find this community. The less stress on her the better. -I so appreciated that an activities director, as she was going around to all tables, came to our table when eating and met my Mom and invited her to go on the scenic outing that was going to be the next day. My Mom wouldn't have likely done that on her own but she was delighted to know about it and the coordinator signed her up. She wouldn't have known what to do otherwise even in seeing it on the calendar page. I'm sure she could have asked and you all would have been great to get her plugged in there, but there are times when I would see it's something she might have seen but wouldn't have thought she could go, or it was too unknown to her that she actually could do it and wouldn't have thought to even inquire. But those activities would be GREAT for her and she would love them. She's missed doing outings for years! She and my Dad would travel and go on outings all the time so this is a return to the past of good times for her to get out on day trips. She was SO sad (literally!) she missed the Tulip Festival trip - her favorite 2 things (Flowers and getting out). -Although I know you have steps to get a new person plugged in, I was thinking if I hadn't been there for the first 2 days, it would have been mostly on her to figure things out, wander, make friends, not eat by herself.... all that can be very intimidating for anyone in life in a new situation. My Mom realized this and has been a trooper trying to be the initiator and stepping out of her comfort zone. I have to say though, if ever she had a question, I had her ask at the desk or someone on staff and you all were friendly and right on it to get her the answer and sometimes go beyond. She's not one to ask for help so this is a big step for her, but also, she would rather become recluse and just do without. She survives ;) So she is doing well at the moment being the one reaching out as best she can. -She has enjoyed the food, but not used to the schedule yet so she has to be careful she doesn't miss dinner. -Because of the new surroundings, unfamiliar schedule and all, I could see a bit more confusion for her so she needed to be reminded a lot of where she was to stay now and reminded times so she didn't miss something. It would be good to see people checking in on her once in a while until she gets routine, especially at the first part of move in. Again, because I was there that might have been why we didn't see anyone come by. -I think because of the community of people, ages, and all abilities, she started to voice that she might start using her walker now (it may not be a stigma to her now). She sees that she is not as strong in her knees and walking as she used to be (walked miles every day for most of her life!) so using her walker would maybe free her up to be more mobile and confident. So seeing that around her in community may have boosted her confidence in using it now. -Overall we are very happy with being there. We know my Mom will be taken care of and realize if we don't have opportunity to have these conversations/reviews you wouldn't know where the needs are for her or anyone else coming in. Thank you for asking :)

Coming from a rehab center after surgery, I needed help with caring for my basic needs and to get stronger. Seeing how other residence were active and as independent as they could be was motivating.
