Hospital for Behavioral Medicine has the opportunity to be best in class. Here are two humble suggestions:1. Reapproaching the clarity with which we all identify, share, and champion the patient journey. I offer this suggestion, as it not only centers on the experience of the patient, but it also impacts the experience of the caregiver, external support services, agency partners, community partners, and other stakeholders. This approach could also serve as a navigation system for the internal teams - always bringing us back on path, if we ever get off course.2. Revisiting and refreshing the employee journey. As the hands and feet of operationalizing our mission, I offer this suggestion to help support and strengthen our workforce. Our goal should include being a preferred employer and top-ranking place to work.Specific to my current role, I will work on advocating for more community-facing engagement opportunities. The objective is both subtle and aggressive/active - but both strategic. Subtly, is to have a presence that authentically meets people where they are such as in art galleries, mental health walks, school events, etc; while actively/aggressively to serve as a community resource by hosting community unifying events on our campus.

Including patients in the admission, treatment planning, and discharge planning stages of the treatment process. Explanations & discussions with patients about their care need to be done regularly so that they can make informed choices, and be an active participant in their treatment rather than a passive participant. Family, caregivers, and any identified supports need to be contacted early in the admission and be consistently involved in the care.
