- Provide alcohol-based hand sanitizer available inside the employee restrooms-I believe nursing staff, especially techs, should have training that emphasizes treating patients with respect, (including tone of voice and manner of speaking), and being able to appropriately intervene when a patient is beginning to escalate. This includes during groups and other programming - if a patient is beginning to escalate the techs should help redirect the patient, de-escalate the situation or remove the patient. Some of the non-clinical staff are very good at doing this. However, quite a few others seem to have a 'hands-off ' approach and do not get involved if a patient is beginning to act up, (i.e. during a group) and only step in if the patient becomes aggressive. And a related comment: Nursing staff on the unit should have the main responsibility for getting patients to groups. and other programming.
