I once filled out a customer satisfaction survey for the guy who installed our cable. He got five stars for everything except the last question, which asked if the technician had demonstrated our new equipment and asked if we had any questions. He didn’t. And we couldn’t figure out how to get it to work, so we were stuck with one channel. It wasn’t an English-language channel, so I probably should have used the opportunity to broaden my Spanish vocabulary… but I only gave him one star for that question. The next day, my Mom got a crazy phone call. I could hear the guy yelling at her through the phone from the next room! It turns out, that one-star question almost got the guy fired, and disqualified him from any promotions or pay raises for the next year, and his wife was pregnant, and this was all in the middle of the pandemic, and he lived about two blocks from us, and he remembered exactly where we lived, and he was coming over right away to show us how to use the remote so we could fill out a new customer satisfaction survey. If I didn’t mention it, he was REALLY angry, and yelling, and kinda crazy. I guess I would be too, if I were him. But I was me, and I was afraid! I only managed to dial nine and one, to call the police, before he started banging on the front door. We decided to let him in to make things right, but I kept the phone in my hand and my thumb was on the one button the whole time. He corralled my parents and their rolling walkers into the living room, and explained the remote control, button by button, in a voice that shifted between rage, ridicule, terror and tears. It wasn’t lost on any of us that, shortly after cruelly implying that my parents were too old or senile to know the difference between Off and On, he discovered that the remote control was programmed incorrectly. It was a simple fix that he corrected in less than a minute, and would have noticed immediately if he had given us the missing demonstration the day before… but a critical enough oversight that was the cause of the situation we were all in. I filled out a new customer satisfaction survey and added extra stars. I did not inform the police nor the cable company about any details of the incident (but only because he still lives two blocks away and still knows where we live) But since then, I have not filled out any more satisfaction surveys. Companies that repeatedly insist I do so, simply never again receive any more of my business. For everyone else… when I am satisfied with the service I receive, I give them my praise, appreciation, and continued patronage. When I am not, I give them the chance to make it right. But I don’t do surveys. Not even for my therapist, which drives her abso-freaking-lutely BONKERS. And therefore provides balance to the universe. You’re welcome. Namaste. Last Saturday, Nalley serviced two of my KIA Souls. One of them will be back to complete some additional work. I also own a third Soul, which I will soon be bringing in as well. For the Soul that was not entirely serviced to my satisfaction… I was already quite aware that the battery needed to be replaced. I could have jump-started it, but instead had it towed in partially for the dramatic entrance of flashing yellow tow truck lights to signal that I knew the battery was dead, but mostly because I was bringing in two cars and can only drive one at a time. Knowing that the battery was dead, and that this was the third dead battery in that car in the past six months… my primary concern (and request) was for the car to be examined to ensure that the vehicle itself was not somehow causing the batteries to fail. I had intended to return the battery itself to the place where it was purchased, since they would replace it for free. Being my Mother’s car, my primary concern is her safety and ensuring that a non-battery issue in the vehicle does not occur yet again… and leave her stranded somewhere without air conditioning in 115° heat. I don't see any notation indicating that this was fully investigated… so I need to warn my therapist in advance that I’ll be having anxiety for the foreseeable future. While I did request that both my Mom and myself be given status updates on the car, I did not anticipate that Mom would authorize the unnecessary cost of replacing the battery, without pressing for confirmation that there is no underlying vehicle issue causing the problem. I have never caught a fish, and never bought a winning lottery ticket, so it wouldn’t seem like a sign from God if we were statistically unlucky enough to get three defective batteries in a row over such a short period of time… but if my Saintly Mother misses a moment of her afternoon soap operas because she gets stuck in the Publix parking lot with another dead battery… there will need to be an exorcism performed on the car and Nalley’s entire service department. Seriously. Her brother is a priest. Think plagues of Egypt and a used car lot full of locusts and frogs. Now that I think about it, wouldn’t it be hysterical if Linda Blair, the actress who played the possessed girl in the exorcist movie, drove a pea-green KIA Soul that matched the vomit she sprayed all over the priest? Maybe you can use that to sell cars around Halloween. Or not. There are several reasons why I have never pursued a career in car sales. I know my strengths and weaknesses, and short helpful answers to the simplest of survey questions are my kryptonite.
